You can actually start anywhere. Even with the big guns (The Savage Detectives and 2666). But if you want something shorter, I think the best places to start are Last Evenings on Earth, By Night in Chile, and Distant Star.
have been fascinated by that myself. as to the above comment I think that the best place to start is with "Last Evenings on Earth" it encapsulates the man's work, covering all his obsessions, ideas etc. but in a short story format, the tales are wonderful & haunt beyond the last turned page.
